The sighting of a rare grey whale of the coast of Massachusetts about the time of painting prompted this work. I have been inspired by the paintings of the 19th century British artist, JMW Turner whose whaling pictures are among my favorites. In this painting I  pay homage to that work while the evocations of the sea and the majesty of the animals themselves are the subject.
