There's a particular quality to a Paris afternoon — the light, the pace, the sense that time is moving differently than it does anywhere else. The jazz standard captures it perfectly: unhurried, a little melancholy, full of color. I was thinking about that feeling when I made this painting.

This small square panel is one of a series of works I've titled after American Jazz Standards — songs that have their own emotional landscapes, their own sense of place and time. Painting and jazz have always felt related to me: both are improvisational, both work in color and rhythm, both are trying to say something that resists being said in words.
