I didn't start this one with the landscape, which is usually where I begin. Instead, I went back to a series of figure drawings — studies of the body in motion, watercolor sketches that were really about weight and gesture more than anything else. I was interested in what happens when you bring that kind of thinking to a painting that has no figure in it at all.

The result is a canvas that feels inhabited — warm transparencies that suggest form without describing it, movement without a source. The body is gone, but something of it remains.
