This painting began in a Tuscan olive grove — drawings and watercolors made on the property, working from the landscape directly. The whites, reds, and delicate greens here carry something of that place: the branches, the light through the trees, the particular quality of a Tuscan sky.

The title comes from two sources. An aria is a song — a solo voice in an opera, something lyrical and sustained. But Aria was also the name of a wolf dog who lived on the property, and who had a presence that was impossible to ignore. Both meanings feel right to me. The painting has that quality: something lyrical and something wild, held together in the same frame.
