This is a hopeful painting. I don't always set out with an emotional intention, but with Beloved I knew early on that's what I was after — something open, something bright. The white and cream passages feel like light and air to me, and the sweeping branches of green, red, yellow, and blue push into that openness without closing it down. Color insisting on itself, but gently.

I'm always in conversation with the painters I love most — Mitchell, Frankenthaler, de Kooning — but Turner is probably the most present here. His seascapes and landscapes are so often dominated by those vast, luminous passages of near-nothing, and that's what I was reaching for: space that feels inhabited by light rather than emptied of it.
