A trough is the lowest point between two waves — that moment of suspension before the next swell rises. There's a stillness to it that I find compelling, a kind of held breath in the middle of all that motion. The blues here are deep and cool, the greens receding into them, and the whole panel has that quality of something paused between one state and the next.

This is the fourth and final panel in a series rooted in Nantucket's midsummer landscape and in Turner's Snow Storm: Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps. Across the four works — Hannibal, Teetering, Squall, Blue Trough — I was tracing the arc of weather: its arrival, its turbulence, and finally this: the quiet after.
