A de Kooning exhibition sent me back to my roots. There's something about his gestural abstraction — the way it holds landscape and figure and pure paint all at once, the way it refuses to resolve — that I find endlessly generative. I came out of that show wanting to paint, and this is what came out.

The landscape underpins the work: suggestions of sky, of green, of new growth. There's turbulence in it, but also a kind of peacefulness — the two things coexisting the way they do in the blues. The title comes from that tradition: music that holds sorrow and beauty in the same breath, that finds something luminous in difficulty.
