This painting came out of early morning walks on the beaches of Nantucket — an island I've been returning to for decades, one that has shaped my work. Nantucket has a long history with whales, with the sea, with the particular kind of attention that comes from living close to the water.

One summer, a family of Right Whales moved in close to shore. I watched them breach — that sudden, explosive emergence from the water — and I couldn't stop thinking about it. Turner painted whaling ships and the sea with that same sense of nature as force, as spectacle, as something that exceeds us. I was thinking about his paintings when I made this one.

Breach is an exuberant painting. It tries to hold that moment — the whale clearing the surface, the spray, the sheer aliveness of it — in an abstract expressionist language that feels equal to the experience.
