Nantucket has a long history with whales, with the sea, with the particular kind of attention that comes from living close to the water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne summer, a family of Right Whales moved in close to shore. I watched them breach — that sudden, explosive emergence from the water — and I couldn't stop thinking about it. Turner painted whaling ships and the sea with that same sense of nature as force, as spectacle, as something that exceeds us. I was thinking about his paintings when I made this one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eBreach\u003c\/em\u003e is an exuberant painting.
