I made this painting after a trip to Rome, where the Baroque is everywhere — in Bernini's sculpture, in Caravaggio's paintings, in the way the light hits stone in the late afternoon. It's an art of drama and intensity, and I felt that energy working its way into the canvas whether I invited it or not.

Campo de' Fiori is the famous market square in Rome — a place of color, noise, abundance. The reds and yellows here are unapologetic. The gestures are sweeping. The landscape this painting suggests is energetic, almost irascible. It doesn't sit still, and it doesn't ask permission.
