The same afternoon on Nantucket that gave me Flowers from the Sea II gave me this one too. I was painting en plein air on a cliff overlooking the sea — wildflowers and meadow grass in the foreground, sea birds in the distance, the water beyond. Two things pulling at me at once: the intimacy of what was right in front of me, and the vastness of what was far away.

Flowers from the Sea I is the first half of a diptych, conceived and painted alongside its companion. Where the second painting leans toward the flowers, this one stays closer to the sea. Each stands fully on its own, but together they tell the whole story of that afternoon.
