This painting started with an afternoon of plein air work on Nantucket — standing on a cliff, looking out over the sea, with meadows and fields of wildflowers filling the foreground and sea birds moving in the distance. There were two things happening at once: something intimate and close, and something vast and far away. I wanted to hold both of them.

Flowers from the Sea II is one half of a diptych — conceived and painted together with Flowers from the Sea I, though each stands fully on its own. Together they represent two registers of the same experience: the large-scale botanical and the abstract landscape, the near and the far, the flower and the sea.
