I've spent a lot of time among olive trees — on residencies in Italy, on trips where I'd set up and paint or draw for hours in the groves. There's a quality of light and stillness in those places that I keep returning to. This painting comes out of all of that time.

Van Gogh is never far from my mind when I work with olive trees. He painted them obsessively near the institution at Saint-Rémy, and for him they carried enormous weight — a former preacher, he connected the groves to the Garden of Gethsemane, to suffering and to solace. I feel something of that when I'm in them too. There's an ancient quality to olive trees, a sense that they've witnessed a great deal and are entirely unbothered by it.

The palette here — those bright blues and yellows — is very Vincent. I wasn't trying to hide that. It felt right.
