One of my favorite paintings is Turner's Snow Storm: Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps — that extraordinary vortex of weather and light, the army almost swallowed by the storm. I've thought about that painting for years. This small panel is one of four works that carry something of that thinking into my own language: the deep greens and blues of the sea can feel, on certain days, like weather made visible.

Small works like this one are intimate in a way that large canvases can't be. You live with them differently — up close, at eye level, in a room you actually inhabit.
