Oil on Canvas, 60 × 52 inches, Unframed
The title is drawn from the poem, "Moments" by Mary Oliver, who writes:
" There is nothing more pathetic
than caution
When headlong might save a life,
even, possibly, your own."
There's a quality of commitment in this painting, of throwing yourself forward without quite knowing where you'll land. The brushwork is exuberant — splashes and marks that move fast, that don't second-guess themselves. Deep blues and fiery reds that bring to mind a sunset over open water, the horizon somewhere ahead.
I think of this as an ocean-scape more than a landscape — the sea as a state of mind, as a metaphor for setting out on a new path with more energy than certainty. That feeling of going headlong into something is one I find worth painting.
