Rome does something to you. The Baroque is inescapable there — it's in the churches, the piazzas, the way Caravaggio's paintings hit you from across a dark room. That raking light, that extreme contrast between shadow and illumination, the sense that something dramatic is always about to happen. I came back from a trip to Rome with all of that still in my eyes, and this painting is what came out.

The palette is deep and dark, the brushwork gestural and urgent. Light breaks through in places, the way it does in a Caravaggio — not gently, but with force. It's an abstract painting, but it carries the emotional temperature of the Baroque: passion, depth, drama held just barely in check.
