I've taken a lot of early morning walks on the beaches of Nantucket, and there's a particular quality to that light — soft, diffuse, the fog not quite lifted, the sky and the water barely distinguishable from each other. The shore birds are out then, moving along the edge of the water, unhurried. It's one of the quietest, most beautiful things I know.

This painting came out of those mornings. The dusty pinks at the center build slowly, like color returning to the world at dawn. The whole canvas has that quality of fog and soft sky — muted but luminous, still but alive. It's a painting that rewards time spent with it, and it's particularly stunning in person.
