I kept a sketchbook in Venice — drawings made on the spot, in the streets and courtyards and along the canals. Venice rewards that kind of attention. The architecture is extraordinary, but what I kept finding myself drawing were the hidden gardens: tucked behind walls, glimpsed through iron gates, unexpected pockets of green in a city built on water.

This series translates those sketchbook drawings into intaglio monoprints, each made using multiple plates in two or three colors. The process transforms the original drawings into something new — looser, more layered, the color doing work that line alone couldn't do. Every print in the series is one of a kind. This is number II. It ships unframed in a tube.
