The title came to me while I was working — that sense of something held in precarious balance, not quite falling, not quite stable. It's a feeling I associate with the light, the sea and the landscape all in a kind of negotiation with each other. The deep greens and blues here carry that tension.

This is the second in a series of four small panels, all of them in conversation with Turner's Snow Storm: Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps — that painting's extraordinary sense of weather as force, of nature as something that overwhelms and absorbs. I've been thinking about it for years, and these panels are part of that ongoing conversation.
