A student asked me once, while struggling to mix color on a landscape painting: What is the color of sky? It's the kind of question that sounds simple until you really sit with it. I was still thinking about it on the drive home that evening — and then the clouds parted over the water in Bristol, Rhode Island, and the sky answered for itself. The color was extraordinary. Intense, warm, almost unbearable in its beauty.

This painting is my best attempt at a response.

I've long been drawn to the way Turner, Corot, and Monet understood nature — not as something to be copied, but as something to be felt and translated. I think of my own abstraction as continuing that conversation, responding to the same light they were chasing, just from where I'm standing now.
