"The Nearness of You" is one of those standards that's about proximity — not grand romantic gestures, but the quiet, physical fact of someone being close. Hoagy Carmichael wrote it, and it's been recorded by everyone from Chet Baker to Norah Jones, each version finding something slightly different in it. What I love is how intimate it is, how small in scale despite the feeling it carries.
This small square panel is part of my Jazz Standards series — works that take their titles and emotional starting points from songs that have meant something to me. Like the song, this painting works in a register that's quiet and close.
