I've been drawn to the light on water for as long as I can remember — the way it refuses to stay still, the way it holds color differently at every hour. This painting came out of my long study of the 19th-century watercolorists who painted Venice: Turner, Monet, Sargent. What they understood, and what I was chasing here, is that moment just before dark when the sea and the sky seem to trade places — when you can't quite tell where one ends and the other begins.

At 44 × 90 inches, this is one of the largest canvases I've made. It needs that scale. The light I was after doesn't compress well — it wants room to breathe, room to pull you in.
