The word threshold has always interested me — the idea of standing at the edge of something, not quite in and not quite out. This painting lives in that space. Sweeping passages of white and blackened green dominate the canvas, and then, at the bottom, a small spring of transparent green: a delicate sprout, barely there, just beginning.

I was thinking about spring when I made this — that moment when the season is still more promise than fact, when the first green appears against all that pale and cold. It's an intimate painting, modest in scale, but it holds a lot of feeling in a small space.
