There's a particular quality to New England in late winter and early spring — still cold but with new life starting to emerge. Crisp skies, residual snow, the first bits of green pushing through. It's a season of anticipation, and I find it endlessly paintable.

Wilder came out of that feeling. The palette is pale and energetic — the kind of light that's almost too bright after months of grey. The brushwork is loose, alive, abstract expressionist in its approach. This is a painting about the energy of a season turning, not a description of it.

It's one of a series of recent abstract landscapes, and has a sister painting — Through the Trees — that shares its sensibility and scale.
