From my studio window in winter, the woods have a particular quality that I keep returning to — the branches bare and tangled, snow on them, and the light coming through in a way it can't in any other season. There's a clarity to winter light that I find beautiful and a little austere. It doesn't flatter. It just illuminates.
This small panel is the second in a series made from that view. The gestural marks try to hold the movement of light through branches — not to describe it exactly, but to find its equivalent in paint.
