Collection: Seascapes

Over the many years I have been painting, I have turned time and again to the sea as my subject. Whether working in oil on canvas at larger scale or on panels in smaller sizes, I translate the forces of water, sky, and weather into gesture, mark, and surface.

Growing up sailing the waters of New England and Nantucket Island, the sea for me, has always been less of a place than a state of being. Informed by the painterly tradition of Turner, each painting pursues that quality of light and atmosphere in motion — turbulent and luminous.

About Michael

Artist Michael Rich approaches art-making as a means of exploring the natural world through the language of contemporary abstraction. A life spent around the woods and waters of New England has helped to shape a love and interest in the natural rhythms of color that remain a focal point in his work today.  Michael comes to the process of painting “free of preconceptions” and aims to discover poetic spaces of memory through painting that is visceral, physical and colorful.
